Evelyn's Miller's mother testifies in Frederiksen murder trial

WEBSTER CITY (KWWL) -

When Evelyn Miller's mother Noel took the stand Thursday, it wasn't so much what she said that was surprising, but what she didn't. Her former live-in boyfriend, Casey Frederiksen, is accused of molesting and murdering five year old Evelyn in 2005. Her body was found in the Cedar River near Charles City.

However, on the stand, Noel had no condemnations for him. Her testimony in Hamilton Co. court was relatively brief, and focused mostly on the night Evelyn went missing. She recalled coming home from work late at night – her daughter was gone, and Frederiksen was in bed.

“I jumped on Casey and asked where Evelyn was and he said she should be on the love seat,” Noel Miller said.

The mother testified that all three of the children slept in the living room on a regular basis. This was the third day of testimony.

Frederiksen was living with Miller, Evelyn and their two young sons at the time of the killing. Previously, witnesses have testified that Frederiksen told them he would become sexually aroused while changing Evelyn's diapers. He's currently in prison for possession of child pornography. During the search for Evelyn, authorities found a hard drive from Frederiksen's computer, which contained hundreds of pictures and videos of adult men engaging in sex acts with children between the ages of 2 and 5.

The State's case focused Thursday on Frederiksen's every changing story of that night. FBI agent Randy Van Gent testified that Frederiksen first claimed to have no knowledge of the disappearance. Then, in a 2007 interview conducted at a Federal prison in Illinois, Frederiksen told investigators he saw his friend Randy Patrie come into their home, and carry Evelyn out at knife point.

“He said he saw Patrie standing there, holding his left hand over Evelyn's mouth and his right hand with a knife to her,” Van Gent said.

The state's case argues this story is false. Patrie has not been charged in connection to Evelyn's death, but is in prison on a separate murder charge.

The jury was also subject to graphic testimony from a man who met Frederiksen in prison. The witness asked his name and image not be released, since he was in prison for distribution of child pornography, and has since been released. He said Frederiksen told him about the graphic ways he sexually abused Evelyn, and the lies he told investigators.

“He said if they knew what he knew he'd get a life sentence,” the witness said.

Frederiksen showed little emotion through this testimony. Noel was also relatively flat on the stand – though as she passed Frederiksen, she paused and seemed to state at him for a moment.

KWWL's coverage of this trial will continue Friday.
