IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

A city in eastern Iowa is one of eight in the country to participate in a Leadership STAR Community Program.

Iowa City was recently selected to participate in the Spring 2015 Leadership STAR Community Program, a Washington, DC-based nonprofit.

The program strives to evaluate, improve and certify sustainable communities.

Iowa City is the fifth city in the state to participate in the program.

Davenport and Des Moines joined the program in 2013 and became STAR-certified in 2014. Charles City and Dubuque joined the program in January 2014 and are currently working toward certification.

"Joining the STAR Community Program is a great opportunity to communicate to the public the City's commitment to sustainability by sharing measurable data that provides examples of our efforts throughout the organization," said Sustainability Coordinator Brenda Nations. "During the first phases of this program, we will be collaborating with students through the University of Iowa's Iowa Initiative for Sustainable Communities. Compilation of data will take about one year, and once completed, the research will provide a road map for organizing projects and priorities in the coming years."

Sixty-six local governments have participated in the Leadership STAR Community program over the past two years. Participating communities report that the program helped them gain a deep understanding of their community's strengths and needs and has provided a springboard for civic engagement, cross-agency coordination, integrated budgeting and performance management, partnerships with philanthropy, and economic development.
