DUBUQUE (KWWL) - The Dubuque Fighting Saints made two trades just before the trade deadline earlier this week.  And for one of the players, becoming a Saint also means a family reunion.

Defenseman Hayden Shaw was acquired from the Waterloo Black Hawks, the Saints announced Tuesday.  He's the son of Head Coach and General Manager of the Fighting Saints, Matt Shaw.

Hayden said the trade came as a surprise.  "Pretty shocked.  A lot of emotions.  I'm really excited but at the same time it was sad to say goodbye to the guys."

The Saints also acquired forward Robby Jackson from the Chicago Steel.  Coach Shaw said the two acquisitions were to help the team, not to reunite his family.

"We tried to bring in two really good players, irregardless of name," Shaw said.

While dad may play down the significance of the reunion, Hayden said his mom doesn't.

"Ah, she's pumped. She keeps texting me how happy she is. The family is back together finally, everyone. It's just a really happy time for all of us," Hayden said.

Coach Shaw echoed the sentiment.  "My wife was probably the happiest person on trade deadline day yesterday," he said.

For the two, even though they've both spent most of their life around hockey, they've never officially been on the same team.

"He's always kinda coached me from the sidelines, but I've never actually played for him," Hayden said.

Hayden, along with Jackson, will make their Fighting Saints debut Friday night when Dubuque hosts Green Bay.
