CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - A woman is at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics following a car crash in which a pipe went through her pelvis.

Just after midnight Cedar Rapids police, firefighters, and an ambulance responded to a single vehicle crash near 16th St and Zika Ave. NW.

Officers say Kelsey Cummings was driving and hit a galvanized gate. The pipe went through the car's grill, radiator, and battery and into the driver, all the way through to the backseat of the car. The pipe went through Cummings'  pelvic area.

Emergency responders removed the doors and roof from the vehicle and dismantled the backseat so they could reach the pipe and cut away parts around Cummings. Firefighters say when an object is impaled through a patient they leave the item unless it is blocking an airway. Surgeons then remove it.

Cummings was conscious at the scene and was the person who called 911.

The crash remains under investigation.
