CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

Iowa State University and the City of Cedar Rapids have announced a new partnership.

Iowa State is creating a research and extension liaison position. The liaison will have an office at Cedar Rapids City Hall.

The goal is to expand agricultural and bioprocessing industries in Cedar Rapids by using research tools available at Iowa State.

Cedar Rapids is already home to several bioprocessing and food ingredient centers including Cargill. DuPont, Penford, ADM, Quaker Foods & Beverages, General Mills, Red Star, Genencor, and Diamond V Mills.

"I feel really confident that we can take an existing industry that's strong in Iowa and move it to the next level with a partnership like this and that is something that we value highly," said Steven Leath, ISU President.

ISU and the City of Cedar Rapids will split the cost of the position, which is estimated to be $114,000. ISU will pay 75% and the City of Cedar Rapids will pay the rest.

Leath says he expects this new partnership may lead to other ISU partnerships with cities.
