MANCHESTER (KWWL) -

One day, Smitty's Tire and Appliance in Manchester was open. The next, it wasn't. And no one knows why.

Instead, there's a simple sign on the door that says, "Closed Out of Business."

"I don't have any idea why or what made it happen," said Jack Klaus, executive director of Manchester's Chamber of Commerce.

Mystery or not, he said the business will be missed.

"Losing that business is a bad thing for the community, like it would be to lose any business," Klaus said. "Fifteen employees, that's tough. Those people are our friends and neighbors."

City Manager Tim Vick agrees.

"They've been a great partner with the city on a number of different projects -- been a huge community promoter," Vick said.

Attempts to reach owner Max Boren were unsuccessful. And there were people working inside the building Tuesday, but no one would answer the door for KWWL.

And this isn't the first time this owner has mysteriously closed a business.

Smitty's Tire and Appliances in Cedar Falls closed its doors early last year with no warning or explanation.

At the time, they were dealing with a number of customers who had bought merchandise from the store, but hadn't yet received it.

Boren told KWWL at that time that everyone who didn't get their item would receive a letter within 90 days and would be reimbursed. It's not clear at this point if that holds true in this case.
