While temperatures outside are still cold, the arrival of spring is near, and that means volunteers are needed.

Late March signals the start of riverbank and stream clean-ups in the Iowa City area, so city leaders are asking residents to help.

Volunteers are will be needed noon to 3 p.m. on March 29, April 12, April 19, and April 26, for clean-ups along the Iowa River Trail and Ralston Creek.

The clean-ups, will involve removing invasive species, woody debris and trash from the river, creeks, and their banks, helps reduce the threat of flooding, protects local waterways, and maintains water quality.

Volunteers are not just limited to adults.

A range of jobs will be available to accommodate different age groups and skill levels, and no experience is necessary.

People of all ages are encouraged to participate, but anyone under 18 years of age must have a parent sign a consent form on the day of the clean-up.

If you'd like to participate in any of the four clean ups, visit www.facebook.com/iowa.city.stormwater.volunteers and click on the "Events" tab. On the actual day of the event, volunteers should check the Facebook page to verify that the clean-up is still being held as scheduled.

Volunteers should wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, and sturdy, closed-toe shoes. Hats are also recommended. The City will provide tools, gloves, and drinking water. Event locations for the three clean-ups scheduled in April will be posted on Facebook, as work progresses.
