Friend's mom: Teen's shooting result of a 'joke'

More details are emerging as the investigation into the shooting of a Vinton teenager continues.

Vinton Police served a search warrant Thursday at the home where 14-year-old Emma Redlinger was shot in the head. They were first called there Tuesday night.

Robyn Winterroth rents the home, located in the 1200 block of W. 4th St. in Vinton. KWWL spoke to her Friday. She said her teenage son dates Redlinger, and that the pair were upstairs Tuesday night with two other teenage boys when she heard the shot.

"It was chaos," Winterroth said.

Winterroth wouldn't agree to an on-camera interview at the advice of her lawyer, but told KWWL that she owns the gun involved. She said that night, she allowed her son to take it upstairs to clean it, since he is an avid hunter and understood proper firearm safety.

She said one of her son's friend's, who KWWL is not naming, believed the gun was unloaded, and pointed it at Redlinger's head as a joke. Then it went off.

Redlinger is in the Pediatric Intensive Care unit at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. A representative of the hospital said Friday evening Emma is in critical, but stable, condition.

"It breaks my heart to tell everyone, but Emma's prognosis is very grim," her mother, Aimee Redlinger, wrote on Facebook earlier this week. "She has significant damage to the left side of her brain and swelling in the right side as well. We've been told that my baby girl will most likely not wake up. Please pray and pray some more for a miracle."

Winterroth said police searched her son's room while serving the warrant, but she's not sure what evidence they may have seized.

Benton County Attorney Dave Thompson said the details of the search warrant have been sealed for 90 days, since the investigation is still ongoing.

Vinton Police Chief Ted Paxton said officials are still treating the shooting as accidental.

No charges have been filed.
