Dash cam captures barely conscious man moaning for help

Posted: Updated:

Around 3 a.m. on a freezing winter morning, and officer pulls up to see a man laying on the ground in front of the closed Cedar Falls Prime Mart.

The man is barely responsive, and Cedar Falls Lieutenant Brooke Heuer offers him her coat.

"I'm going to put my coat on you, ok?" she says to the man.

It isn't hard to tell he is in pain.

On dash cam video, you can hear Lieutenant Mark Howard say if he weren't doing business checks, he would have never found the man, who they call Doug.

"I thought he was a rug rolled up or something," you can hear Howard say.

Both officers work to keep Doug conscious.

"Just keep talking," says Howard. "They're on their way."

The officers continue to ask the man questions.

"Did you walk here Doug?"

Doug says he doesn't know.

The two officers gave the man the coats off their own backs.

Captain Craig Berte says the business was so dark and cold, it was very likely had the man not been found, he could have died.

It is still unclear why Doug was out in the cold or how he is doing.
