Town of Hazleton braves record lows temps

Posted: Updated:
HAZLETON (KWWL) - A small town in Iowa is getting national attention for its record-breaking temperatures.

The town of Hazleton tied Friday morning for the coldest spot in the entire nation, with a plummeting -30 degrees.

Surprisingly, though, people were out meandering in Hazleton Friday, including Dan Gerstenberger.

Gerstenberger wasn't just outside grilling, but grilling in a t-shirt in freezing weather. He owns Eagle's Roost, the only bar and grill in town.

"I get teased all the time. A lot of the time in the winter I'll be out in shorts and sandals, I just love the cold!"

Gerstenberger grew up a few miles outside of Hazleton. He's moved to warmer climates in his lifetime, but has chosen to return to Iowa and retire in Hazleton.

The bar and grill is somewhat of a family affair, as his two daughters work in the kitchen. The girls say a t-shirt in winter weather, is just another day for their dad.

"I hardly see him wear anything with sleeves," Megan Gerstenberger said.

Gerstenberger says native Hawkeyes are used to weather like this, and after all, it's life in Iowa.
