CEDAR FALLS (AP) -

A janitor is accused of stealing money from desks at Cedar Falls city government offices.

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports the 37-year-old female janitor was arrested on two counts of third-degree theft and three counts of fifth-degree theft. She's been released from jail.

The woman worked for a janitorial service the city hired in 2014 after laying off city-employed janitors.

City workers began noticing items missing from their desks last fall, but thought they had simply misplaced them.

But in October, one employee noticed $50 missing from inside a sympathy card. Recreation Center employees also reported the theft of a bank deposit bag with nearly $600.

The woman has allegedly admitted to investigators that she checked desks and took any cash she could find.
