VINTON (KWWL) - A tragic accident now has a 14-year-old girl fighting for her life.  A teenager was handling a gun at a Vinton home when the weapon discharged.

Emma Redlinger was shot in the head. She was taken to a local hospital and had to be airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Redlinger is a student at Vinton-Shellsburg High School where she's on the minds of many. Crisis teams were available at  schools in the district so that anyone who needed to talk to them could.

"Vinton is a tight-knit community," said Shelly Petersen, Principal at the middle school. "We take care of each other and we take care of our own and when one person hurts we all hurt."

Police say what happened is an accident, friends spending time together and one was holding a gun.

Officers say it's a reminder to always treat a gun like it's loaded.

"There's always a mindset that a gun is unloaded," said Ted Paxton, Vinton Police Chief. "I don't believe there's ever a gun that's unloaded. You need to treat your weapons as if they are loaded at all times."

Officers aren't sure if any charges will be filed in this tragic accident.
