WATERLOO (KWWL) -

The National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum selected Max Thomsen as the first ever winner of the Bob Steenlage Iowa High School Wrestler of the Year Award. The award will be given annually to the top wrestler in the state of Iowa.

Thomsen, a senior at Union Community High School, recently became the 24th Iowan in state history to win 4 consecutive state championships. He ended his high school career as Iowa's all-time pins leader and finished with a record of 210-1. Thomsen will continue his career at Northern Iowa next season.

The Steenlage Award is named after Bob Steenlage, the first 4-time state champion in Iowa. Steenlage achieved the feat from 1959-1962 for Britt High School.

The Gable Museum will present the award to Thomsen during the Glen Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame of Iowa inductions on May 30.
