Almost 30 deer collected during first weekend of CWD deer sampling

Posted: Updated:

Almost 30 deer were collected in the Allamakee County, where the DNR gave hunters scientific collector permits for people to hunt deer in order to have them tested for Chronic Wasting Disease. Hunters brought in 27 deer over the first weekend.

The DNR says the goal is to get 150 samples on private property and 50 from the Yellow River State Forest; three deer-harvested in that area during last hunting season tested positive for CWD.

Officials think they had a big enough turnout on their first weekend, to help meet their goal by March 15; for the weekend, they issued 60 scientific collectors permits.

Allamakee County is the only one in Iowa where the disease has been detected.

CWD affects the brain of the deer and is always fatal.
