IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Solar-powered trash and recycling compactors will soon come to Iowa City.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources' Solid Waste Alternative Program is giving funding to help purchase four solar-powered trash and recycling compactors.

With the new compactors, city leaders say it will reduce the need for daily trash pickup.

The two-sided containers allows lower labor costs, fuel conservation and many other benefits.

One side of the container is designated for recyclables such as paper, bottles and cans, and the other for disposal of trash.

The solar-powered system sends an alert when it's time to empty the containers and will be installed in the spring.

City crews say the new compactors marks the first step toward improving Downtown public space recycling.

If the project proves to be successful, the City may consider expanding the program.
