UPDATE: Teenager identified; in critical condition after being shot

VINTON (KWWL) -

Authorities have released the name of the 14-year-old girl shot in the head by accident Tuesday night.

The Vinton Police Department says the girl is Emma Redlinger of Vinton, who remains in critical condition at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Police say the shooting appears as accidental and the preliminary investigation into the incident continues. Additional information may be provided as it becomes available.

A 14-year-old girl is in critical condition after being shot in the head.

It happened on Tuesday night in Vinton at 1207 W. 4th Street. Police say another teenager had been handling a .22 caliber rifle, when the rifle went off, hitting the victim in the head.

She was flown to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Police say their investigation is ongoing.

Authorities are at a home in Vinton investigating a report of a person shot in the head.

It's happening now at a home on W. 4th St. KWWL's crew on the scene reports officers with Vinton Police and the Benton Co. Sheriff's office are there.

The victim is still alive, and has been taken to the hospital, according to a Sheriff's deputy. The age and gender of the victim is not being released.

Though the cause of the shooting is not confirmed, police believe there is no danger to the public at this time.
