UNI wins on the court boost student enrollment

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) - The University of Northern Iowa Panthers are getting a lot of attention, for their performance on the court.

The NCAA ranks UNI 11th in the country. The panthers picked up another win Wednesday night against Loyola.

The Panthers' winning season acts as an advantage for the entire university. When a sports team does well, it often causes peaks in enrollment. Essentially, what happens on the court can have a direct effect on campus.

Matt Kroeger with UNI Admissions says this season is major exposure for the institution.

"It gives us some additional exposure out there in the public marketplace. It's definitely something to rally around and be excited about."

Senior Nick Stanford remembers his on-campus visit back in 2010; it was anything but ordinary.

"It was the day the men's basketball team played in the Sweet 16. Everybody was wearing purple, everyone was excited," Stanford said.

UNI Admissions says that kind of energy plays into recruitment. The university saw roughly 400 potential students last month. In January of last year, about 360 students visited the school. The year before, in January 2013, 285 visited.

Admissions also says enrollment peaked in the fall of 2010, after the team's appearance in the Sweet 16.

UNI says the school plans to see an increase in enrollment this upcoming fall, however, couldn't give any concrete numbers to speculate.

The next Open House for admitted students at UNI is planned for Friday, Feb. 27. Additional Panther Open Houses are scheduled for the month of April.
