NORTH LIBERTY (KWWL) -

An Iowa City police officer has found himself on the other side of the law after being arrested for operating while under the influence.

The North Liberty Police Department says 39-year-old Carlos Trevino was arrested on Feb. 10 after he appeared to be passed out in his SUV that sat running in the intersection of North Dubuque Street and North Front Street.

The arresting officer says Trevino had bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and smelled like alcohol. He says Trevino also couldn't keep his balance and didn't know where he was.

After refusing to perform field sobriety tests, Trevino was taken to the Coralville Police Department. Police says a test administered there showed he had a .197 blood-alcohol content.

According to the Iowa City Police Department website, Trevino is assigned to Beat 2 which covers the southeast side of the city.

The Iowa City Police Department says Trevino is on paid administrative leave pending the results of an internal investigation.
