CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

Officials in Cedar Rapids are encouraging pet owners to be aware when it gets to these freezing temperatures.

They suggest keeping your cat inside. Outdoor cats sometimes sleep under the hoods of cars, and can be injured or killed by the fan belt.

For dog owners, wipe off your dog's legs and stomach when they come inside. Dogs can ingest salt, antifreeze, or other potentially dangerous chemicals when they lick their paws.

They also suggest to never leave your animals in the car in the cold weather. A car can act as a refrigerator in the winter.
