CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - In an effort to keep teenagers out of tanning beds this prom season, Mercy Medical Center is holding a pre-prom skin cancer awareness event.

The event will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2015, from 2-4 p.m. at the Hall-Perrine Cancer Center.

Teens can get sunless tanning tips as well as hair and makeup ideas from industry experts. There will also be
a vendor fair and fashion show.

Two local skin cancer survivors will share their tanning stories and doctors will speak, too.

According to the American Cancer Society, skin cancer is the most common of all cancers and people who use tanning beds before age 35 will increase their chances of getting skin cancer by nearly 60 percent.
