Alleged multi-state scammers caught in Iowa

Posted: Updated:

Police say they arrested two scam artists trying to fool credit unions in Iowa, and they believe financial institutions in other states may already be victims.

Authorities arrested Michael Thomas and Barbara Lopp last Wednesday in Sioux City.  Police say the scam artists approached at least five local
credit unions with fake credit carts to get a cash advance.

Police say Thomas told the tellers that his mother had just died and he needed a $9,800 cash advance for funeral expenses.

Authorities say Thomas and Lopp were also in Nebraska, Oklahoma, Wisconsin and several other states.  Sioux City police are looking for any banks or other financial institutions who may have been a victim so they can also file a report.

While in Sioux City, Thomas was using a different name, Davon Miller.
He also had several fake IDs:  an Illinois ID with the name Jason Herderson, a California ID with the name Matthew Francis, and another California ID with the name Donald Rose.

Authorities say Lopp also had fake IDs and credit cards with the name Cherry Fuller.
