DUBUQUE COUNTY (KWWL) - The Western Dubuque Community School District Board of Directors announced this morning they've pegged Rick Colpitts as their new superintendent.

Jeff Corkery, the current superintendent, will retire at the end of the school year.  Colpitts will officially start July 1.

"I'm tremendously excited for this opportunity," Colpitts said.  "But at the same time, it will be bittersweet.  I've been here for ten years and know a lot of people and have developed a lot of relationships with them.  But I'm excited to start."

Colpitts currently works as the Executive Director of Human Resources for the Dubuque Community School District.  He's also served as both a vice-principal in the school district, and a principal twice.

What is he looking to do once he takes over?

"Get to know people--that's the first order of business," he said.  "Beyond that, I have no preconceived ideas about what I want to do, change or fix.  I just need to get in there, get to know the people of the community and district, and we'll go from there."

Thirty people applied for the position and the board interviewed four finalists in early February.  The other three finalists were: Western Dubuque High School Principal Dave Hoeger, Osage Community School District Superintendent Steve Bass and Dirk Halupnik, deputy superintendent of the Linn-Mar Community School District.
