MARION (KWWL) - The 2008 Iowa Smokefree Air Act banned smoking inside most public places. We've all gotten so used to it, some of the reminder signs are fading.

City parks in Marion may be the next place where smokers won't be able to light up.

It's an idea approved by the Marion Park Board -- which hopes the city council will agree. Some smokers feel it's a step too far.

"I'm not into that," said Valerie McKee, a smoker. "It's out in the open. What's it gonna hurt?"

Others say they support the idea.

"I don't expect anyone to sit around me that don't smoke and have to inhale my secondhand smoke," said Edward Saaks, a smoker.

The Marion Park Board wants to go beyond just cigarettes and cigars. The board is backing a nicotine free park system which would also ban things like chewing tobacco and electronic cigarettes.

"You can use them with other products," said Sara Mentzer, Blue Zones Project - Marion, the group which helped write the ordinance. "It takes out the question of what's really in them, the e-vaporizers and everything else and just creating a family friendly, safe environment."

While supporters would like to see nicotine free parks before summer, the concept still needs approval from the city council.
