New Hampton family recovering after house fire

Posted: Updated:

A New Hampton family is trying to figure out what to do next after a fire took over their home.

It happened Thursday night at their home on the 300 block of West Jefferson Street.

Maria Rodriguez says she was actually upstairs sleeping when a fire broke out at her family's home.

"Then I woke up and looked out my window. I saw the window next door -- there was flames and smoke coming out of them," said Rodriguez.

It started in her brother's room upstairs.

Rodriguez says the rest of her family was downstairs watching a movie, but everyone made it out safely.

"A sense of relief just washed over all of us and we're just like, 'OK, we're OK, and we're going to make it,'" said Rodriguez.

Now the Rodriguez family is trying to figure out what's next.

That's where the kids' schools come in. Both the high school and elementary schools in town deployed resources for the family immediately after the fire.

"If you could have one thing or two things, I was kind of thinking, 'Could we buy a toy?' You know I was kind of thinking of those things, and he just said -- it's just this family to a T -- he said, 'I'm just glad I have my family,'" said Christina Carlton, St. Joseph Community School Principal.

"So the support we're getting, I think (is) what pretty much is helping us get through this," said Rodriguez.

The Rodriguez family has lived in New Hampton for roughly 10 years.

There is an account set up at Security State Bank in New Hampton. Just tell them you want to donate towards the Rodriguez Family account.
