CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

Snow, ice, and below-zero temperatures: the ingredients for a miserable day for most humans.

But do you ever wonder how livestock stay warm in such conditions?

Troy Stevenson from Hick's Place in Cedar Falls says that Iowa cows are tough and can handle it.

"They have been through Iowa winters before, so we don't have any troubles," Stevenson said.

Keeping them comfortable is actually quite simple, he said.

"We use extra bedding and we keep the water and food coming," Stevenson said. "Keeping the water thawed out is also pretty big this time of year. As long as you give them water and food, they are pretty good."

The same goes for calves and pregnant cows.

Some owners place jackets on their  livestock, but it's personal preference. Stevenson says the most important factors are food and shelter this time of year.
