CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

A new animal shelter has opened its doors in Cedar Rapids.

Last Hope Animal Rescue (LHAR) will be used as an adoption and intake center while housing homeless pets until foster or permanent homes are found.

Board members and volunteers with the non-profit say it will better serve the needs of animals in the area.

"They're all looking for new homes. Most of them come from other shelters in the area. Some of them from southern Iowa, Missouri and Illinois," said Crystal McGuire, LHAR board member.

Most of the animals come from local kill shelters.

McGuire says it's purpose is to save as many homeless, abused and abandoned animals as they can and then place as many animals as possible.

The shelter is an all-volunteer animal rescue and they are looking for more volunteers.
