Waverly bridge closing causes headache for parents

WAVERLY (KWWL) -

Structural problems have forced a longtime bridge over the Cedar River to close in Waverly.

After an inspection, engineers said the 3rd St. SE bridge is unsafe so city officials immediately closed it.

A bridge is a structure to carry a road, a framework that connects to ends, a link, or a bond.

For the Schneiderman family, it's something that makes life easier.

"My kid's school is just on the other side of the bridge. Now walking to school is...well it's kind of infeasible," says Joshua Schneiderman.

The light on the 3rd St. bridge in Waverly is still flashing, but don't walk.

An inspector determined deteriorating conditions makes it unsafe to drive or even walk on it.

Now, parents on this side of the river will have to change plans to get their kids to nearby Southeast Elementary, just on the other side of the river.

"In a town this size kids can walk to school generally, but this is going to make it a lot more difficult and I think a lot will forgo the opportunity," Schneiderman says.

And it's not just about getting to school.

"Sometimes as a family we ride our bikes across the bridge," says Schneiderman's daughter, Maya.

Engineers say the connection between the trusses and bearings is deteriorating, so heavy car traffic could lead to a collapse.

He wants a solution.

"The community has been kind of planned around this being an artery for the traffic," he says.

City officials say people should use the Bremer Avenue bridge and take 1st St SW and 7th Ave SE as alternate routes.
