CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - Two years ago when ice jams formed on the Cedar River, water covered streets and came too close for comfort for Pierson's Flower Shop.

"It was terrible," said Al Pierson, owner. "Just about put us out of business because it was within six inches of knocking our boiler and our power out."

Since then, the City of Cedar Rapids has been working to better predict the jams by keeping an eye on the ice as the weather warms up. City employees say that all of those warmer days we've had this winter mean the ice isn't as thick as it's been in past years.

"The warmer days do help prevent the risk of an ice jam," said Jonathan Durst, Cedar Rapids Sewer Superintendent.

The city also installed a new valve near Pierson's shop to help prevent flooding. It didn't get tested last year, the jams weren't a problem then, and Pierson hopes that that this year Mother Nature will play nice.

"We hope it's gonna go out nice and smooth and it won't cause any problems," said Pierson.
