Iowa radio personality relieved after avoiding deportation

MASON CITY (AP) -

A Mason City radio personality says it's like the "weight of the world" was lifted off his shoulders after learning he could stay in the U.S. following a potential deportation to Canada.

James Shaman of 103.7 The Fox tells the Mason City Globe Gazette he's learned federal prosecutors have agreed to settle his case.

The 40-year-old native of Manitoba, Canada, says he should get his green card back soon. He came to the U.S. with his parents when he was 2.

Shaman says a record check over three years ago at a border crossing alerted officials to a 1993 burglary conviction. He says he has turned his life around since then.

Federal law allows legal foreign residents to be deported for a number of criminal convictions.
