Powerball jackpot hits estimated $485 million

DES MOINES (KWWL) - Wednesday's drawing for the Powerball jackpot is now even higher than estimated due to strong sales.

The jackpot was initially estimated at $380 million following Saturday's drawing, but it is now raised to an estimated $485 million annuity, or a $327.7 million cash option.

It ranks as the third-largest jackpot in Powerball history and is No. 5 on the list of the largest lottery prizes ever offered in North America.

The Powerball jackpot was last won in a Nov. 29 drawing, with a ticket purchased in the state of Washington, so it has been growing for more than two months.

It's been nearly a year since the jackpot was at this level, where it reached $423.5 million. The jackpot has been over the $200 million mark a few times since then, but this is the first time it has climbed higher than that.

Eight lottery tickets sold in Iowa have won Powerball jackpots.
