New Hampton Schools examining religious music "tradition"

NEW HAMPTON (KWWL) -

A big discussion at Monday night's New Hampton School Board meeting about religion, music, and public schools.

About 100 people packed into the New Hampton High cafeteria.

Two parents said the school's music department's annual Coffeehouse Concert's final song - called "In This Very Room" is overtly religious.

They also say an annual tour of area churches by the music department could be seen as promoting the Christian faith and isolating those kids who aren't Christian.

Supporters say it's a longtime tradition that's part of the fabric of their community.

School leaders said they're going to contact their attorneys, the Iowa Association of School Boards and others to make sure their diversity policy, the songs and the tour aren't promoting the Christian faith.
