DALLAS (KWWL) -

Southern Methodist University has announced they will honor former Mustangs and University of Iowa head coach Hayden Fry with the inaugural Legends Award.

Fry, who coached 11 seasons at SMU beginning in 1962, will be the first to receive the award that recognizes a person who made significant contributions to the SMU Athletics Program outside of athletic success.

After his 11 years at SMU, Fry went on to North Texas before coming to Iowa in 1979. Fry, Iowa's all-time winningest football coach, collected a 143-89-6 record before retiring after the 1998 season. His career head coaching record is 232-178-10, making him the 10th all-time winningest collegiate coach.

Fry will receive the award in the same year that marks 50 years since Jerry LeVias became the first African-American student-athlete to receive a scholarship at a Southwest Conference school.

Fry will receive award at the SMU Hall of Fame Banquet on May 1.
