CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

The Iowa Winter Games kicked off in Cedar Rapids this weekend.

There were figure skating and ice hockey competitions at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.

Organizers say it's not always about the competition, it's about providing sports and recreation opportunities through Olympic-style programs.

"The games continued to grow and grow," said Cory Kenny, Iowa Winter Sports communications director. "Cedar Rapids was a great option for us to expand our games with the facilities in town, whether it be high schools, Kirkwood or the ice arena here.

There are about 4,000 athletes taking part in 26 sports from basketball, dodge-ball, and many more.

The youngest athlete is 4-years old, the oldest is 90-years-old.
