Top ranked Hawkeye wrestlers hold off #5 Penn State

Posted: Updated:
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (KWWL) -  It came down to heavyweight, but #2 Bobby Telford got the job done, shutting out Jimmy Lawson 3-0. The win secured an 18-12 victory for top ranked Iowa against 4-time defending National Champion Penn State.

The Hawkeyes shot out to an early 12-3 lead in the lower weights, however that did come with some disappointment. At 133 pounds, Penn State's Jimmy Gulibon shocked #3 Cory Clark late. The 7th ranked Gulibon, trailing by one late, took down Clark in the final seconds, earning back points, to rally for an 8-5 win.

Iowa suffered another upset at 165, where unranked freshman Garett Hammond picked up a 4-2 win over #7 Nick Moore.

However, wins by Telford and #8 Sammy Brooks at 184, were enough to give Iowa the victory, and keep the Hawkeyes perfect in the dual season.
