Local Radio Shack franchises await word of future

VINTON (KWWL) -

Electronics giant Radio Shack announced as part of bankruptcy procedures, it's closing up to 2,400 stores.

The list includes the store in Waterloo as well as 2 stores in Cedar Rapids, and 1 in Marshalltown.

It may not be the end for the company or Radio Shack products.

More than 1,700 of the closed stores will re-open as Sprint phone stores, which would still include Radio Shack branded products.

In some towns, customers won't notice a difference from what they see now.

Cris Sturtz is a Radio Shack expert.

As the department manager at LaGrange Pharmacy in Vinton, he helps customers find what they're looking for.

"I always do my absolute best to help the customer find what they need, answer any questions they may have, help them with any problems they may have, I even do house calls," said Sturtz.

The pharmacy has a Radio Shack franchise.

Part of the store has been a Radio Shack since 2006.

Lots of Radio Shacks in small towns all over the country are similar - part of a pharmacy or office supply store or hardware store.

"We really don't know a lot about what's going to happen with the franchise portion of it," said Dan LaGrange, partner/owner of LaGrange Pharmacy.

LaGrange says franchises like his aren't closing but he's taking precautions to continue with or without the Radio Shack name.

"We're still going to provide electronics and all the same stuff we've been supplying. Just finding different sources for it and making sure we can still provide these things for the people of Vinton," said LaGrange.

For Sturtz, he's hoping the Radio Shack name survives.

"To me, the Radio Shack name means more than just the product. A lot of it is the service, the customer service."

Radio Shack's Chapter 11 bankruptcy does not affect franchisees or Radio Shack's foreign subsidiaries.

The company has 60 company stores and franchise stores.

14 are on the list for possible closure.

It does not include stores located in Cedar Falls, Dubuque, or Iowa City.

There is no timetable on the closures as the company makes its way through bankruptcy court.
