Cedar Falls mayor running for 17th term

Mayor Jon Crews has announced he will be running for his 17th term.  He has been the mayor of Cedar Falls for 30 of the last 44 years.  Crews has released the following statement.

"Being mayor of Cedar Falls has become much of my life. Thanks to great staff and wonderful citizen support Cedar Falls has become a great place to call home.

I know that over the next few years Cedar Falls will face numerous challenges as it continues to grow and improve. I want to be a part of meeting those issues and solving the problems. My leadership and proven experience will be important to our continued success in the future.

Our recent accomplishments are measurable. We are ranked the 4th Safest City in Iowa, up from 5th place in 2013. We are expanding in the north and south industrial parks. This brings more jobs, more young families and more residential growth. Our unemployment rate is among the lowest in the State.

Cedar Falls has been placed on the international stage thanks to the recognition we received for our Communication Utility from the President and from Google worldwide. When I urged the development of a municipal communication utility 22 years ago, we could not have fully comprehended how important that move would turn out to be.

Cedar Falls has been a leader in promoting the 1¢ sales tax that all visitors who shop our City pay. This tax has been instrumental in providing Cedar Falls residents with safe and smooth streets. With the recent passage of the LOST (local option sales tax) at an 85% voter support we will keep up the pace of street repairs long into the future.

I am asking voters to elect me to a 17th term on Election Day this fall. I am announcing now in response to many who have urged me to stay the course. I love Cedar Falls and I am proud to serve as the chief elected official. I want voters to support me in my bid to make Cedar Falls even better.”
