CORALVILLE (KWWL) -

Michael Swanson smiled when he was told he'd be spending the rest of his life in prison. Swanson killed clerks at two convenience stores in Iowa in 2010.

He's now an inmate at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center in Coralville and he's facing attempted murder charges based on an incident there which happened in November.

According to court documents, he used an "edged weapon" to slash at an inmate's neck while third inmate, Michael Ivester, held the victim's arms and hands. The victim had 15 cuts that needed stitches.

Swanson made his initial appearance in Johnson County Court this week where a judge set a $100,000 cash bond. Swanson, however, will not be able to bond out as he must continue to serve his two life sentences in prison for murder.
