Waverly basketball player inspires sportsmanship

Posted: Updated:
WAVERLY (KWWL) - Aaron Dunn can't get enough of basketball.

He likes to scrimmage with his teammates and practice his free throws.

He loves his teammates, and they love him back.

"It's cool how he can just change the mood of practice," said Dunn's teammate, Jordan Downing. "He is always smiling, he's so happy all the time."

Aaron has autism. But that never slows him down. If he misses a free throw, he just tries again.

And that's exactly what happened in Waverly's freshman game against Oelwein.

It was the end of the fourth quarter, and an Oelwein player got a rebound from Aaron's missed shot.

Waverly's coach said what happened next was sportsmanship like he's never seen.

"He just grabbed the ball and handed it back to Aaron," said Waverly coach Ross Timmermans. "Aaron just shot it again, and got the rebound a few more times. Finally, after about four shots, he made it in."

His teammates' reaction was priceless. But it wasn't just them: Everyone was cheering for Aaron's shot.

With just a minute to go, Waverly had already won the game.

"But it didn't matter to them, you know?" says Timmermans. "They just wanted to do the right thing. I really commend them for that."
