Two former Hawkeye football players arrested for drunk driving

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -  Two seniors on the University of Iowa football team were arrested for drunk driving early Wednesday morning in two separate incidents in downtown Iowa City.

Wide receiver Damond Powell, 22, was stopped shortly after 1:20 a.m. for driving with no headlights or taillights. According to the criminal complaint, Powell admitted to police that he had been drinking. A preliminary breath test showed a blood-alcohol content level of .122, the Iowa limit is .08.

John Lowdermilk, 22, was pulled over shortly after 2 a.m. for a brake light that was out. Lowdermilk told police he was picking up friends at a downtown Iowa City bar. He later admitted to being at the bar and drinking.

Police said he failed a field sobriety test and provided a preliminary breathalyzer test with a reading of .094, the Iowa limit is .08.

Powell and Lowdermilk both played in all 13 games during the 2014 football season.

The University of Iowa has not commented on this morning's arrests.
