Authorities refocus murdered girls search on Seven Bridges park

Posted: Updated:

On a quiet road in Bremer county, two crosses stand for two little girls.

It's on the corner of a dead-end street, right outside Seven Bridges park, where the bodies of murdered cousins Lyric Cook and Elizabeth Collins were found in 2012.

"I hope justice is served," said Roger Wheeler, who lives down the road.

He remembers the search for the girls.

"It was lit up every night down there," Wheeler said. "It looked like a city."

Hunters were the first to discover the bodies. In a Tuesday morning news conference, investigators said they believe the killer was likely familiar with the park.

"We don't think it was hap-hazard that somebody just happened to go to Seven Bridges," said Evansdale Police Chief Kent Smock.

The park is popular with hunters and fisherman, but since the bodies were found, the Bremer County Sheriff's office continues to patrol the area, just in case the killer returns.

"It does hit home," said Bremer Co. Sheriff Dan Pickett. "I have girls of my own, and I can imagine how the family feels."

Still, with no suspect, police say if you've visited the area, call them. They need to know if anyone may have seen the suspect.

"I certainly hope they find whoever did it," Wheeler said. "It could happen. Might not happen.

But until the killer is found, the two crosses stand silently by, waiting.

"Elizabeth and Lyric deserve to rest in peace," Smock said.

Authorities stressed -- they don't want to or intend to falsely accuse anyone that has visited the park. They just need the public's help to catch the killer. The tipline is open at 319-232-6682.
