Snow Pioneers ready for action

MANCHESTER (KWWL) -

When winter storms hit Eastern Iowa, there's no telling what can happen on the roads.

Sometimes, police cars and ambulances can only go so far.

That's when snow groomers come into play; these machines help move, compact, and flatten snow.

The Snow Pioneers in Manchester have been operating them for years, and they go where regular vehicles can't.

"The roads are impassable of course, regular vehicles couldn't get through so we would take the snow cat and do rescues," says past president Jim Willey.

Willey and his wife Becky are both state certified groomers.

They know the lay of the land, and that really helps.

"It looks totally different in the groomer when you're going across an open field," says Becky. "And you see some of these landmarks you usually see from the road. As a normal person on the road, you may not recognize those things."

For the Willeys, helping law enforcement is a family affair.

Their granddaughter is a snow pioneer in training.

Becky Willey says grooming is in their family's blood.
