Winter storm warning covers much of KWWL viewing area tonight, tomorrow

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for much of the KWWL viewing area until 9pm on Sunday.

Our far northern counties from Charles City to Decorah are under a winter weather advisory until 9pm on Sunday

Rain will overspread the area this afternoon but quickly change to snow by 6pm. Snowfall will increase in coverage and intensity overnight.

Areas along and south of Highway 20 will get the most snowfall out of this system with many getting 7-10 inches by Sunday evening, but northern counties will still see 4 to 7.

The winds will switch to the northeast and pick up to 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 35 mph at times. This will cause blowing and drifting concerns mainly Sunday into early afternoon. Visibilities may be reduced to half a mile or less at times.

Travel will become difficult over much of the area on Sunday. Conditions should slowly improve Sunday night as the snow winds down and winds lighten up.
