DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Clarke University in Dubuque is adding a football program, and is planning to field its first-ever team beginning in the fall of 2018.

The Clarke Board of Trustees voted this morning to add football to its lineup.

The school says Clarke has been considering adding the sport for many years, and a recent study was completed by a task force last month.  The group found adding football would increase enrollment, school spirit, and help with gender diversity.  The current student population at Clarke is 70 percent female, and no men attended the university before 1979.

Clarke is expected to begin football recruiting in 2017.  The university is currently in talks with the Dubuque Community School District about utilizing Dubuque Senior High School's Dalzell Field for Clarke's games.

The team will compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics in a conference to be determined.
