CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - 21-year-old Jonathan Youngbear faces a maximum sentence of life in prison after pleading guilty to second degree murder today in federal court.

Youngbear had originally been charged with 1st degree murder after the stabbing on the Meskwaki Nation Settlement in February 2014.

But in a plea agreement to the lesser charge, Youngbear admitted he stabbed Severn Jefferson twice in the neck and chest with a knife.
According to the Department of Justice, Youngbear further admitted Jefferson bled to death as a result of the stab wounds. Youngbear was 20 at the time, and said he was under the influence of alcohol and also had methamphetamine in his system when the knife attack happened.

In addition to a possible maximum sentence of life in prison, Youngbear also faces a $250,000 fine, $100 in special assessments, and five years of supervised release following any imprisonment.
