WATERLOO (KWWL) - A scouting program with ties to Waterloo announced it will provide financial assistance to girls whose parents were affected by recent John Deere layoffs.

The Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois announced it will offer the financial help both to girls currently in the programs as well as girls wanting to join.

The financial assistance program is offered year-round on a case-by-case basis, scouting officials said.

"We believe so strongly in girls continuing to grow and learn in our programs that we'll offer financial assistance for girls to participate in Girl Scouts," said Holly Bark, senior regional membership manager in Waterloo. "The last thing we want to do is turn a girl away from our programs and events because one of her parents has been laid off."
