DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Two women who stole a baby Jesus figurine from the Church of the Resurrection in Dubuque in late December have been charged with theft, police say.

According to a press release from the Dubuque Police Department, Sarah Maus, 35, and Taiana Butler, 19, turned themselves in last week after learning arrest warrants had been issued.

Surveillance video from the church clearly shows a silver SUV pulling up to the nativity scene, a woman jumping out of the passenger seat, snatching the figurine, and jumping back into the car and speeding away.

Dubuque Police said they used traffic cameras to find the vehicle, and tracked it to Maus' driveway.  When she was interviewed about the incident, she admitted to participating in the theft by driving the vehicle.

Butler was the one who got out of the car to steal the figurine.  She was also interviewed and admitted to the theft, police said.

The police also said heavy news and social media coverage of the theft prompted them to return it just days after they had stolen it.

They've both been charged with fourth-degree theft, a serious misdemeanor.
