CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

A Mason City man was sentenced to more than 21 years in federal prison for selling his dog to buy a gun to shoot his son.

The United States Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Iowa says 58-year-old Billy Douglas Thorne was convicted on April 17 of one count of possession of a firearm as a felon.

Court documents show that on July 24, 2012, Thorne traded his dog for a .22 caliber rifle. Officials say Thorne wanted to use the gun to shoot his son.

According to the court, because Thorne had been convicted in Florida in 1997 of five counts of burglary of a dwelling and one count of armed burglary, all felonies, he had friends hide the gun in Mason City park.

Thorne, who was deemed by the court to be an armed career criminal, was sentenced to 21 years and 10 months in federal prison. There is no parole in the federal system.
