JOHNSON COUNTY (KWWL) - A flipped semi at the spot where Interstates 380 and 80 interchange -- it's a common sight and happened again Wednesday morning.

On the westbound side, signs warn truck drivers to go slow but trucks still loose control. It can be a problem eastbound, too, sometimes closing the ramp.

"In a big truck, once you start turning and it's not right, it's hard to recover," said Robert Santillanes, Truck Driver.

The Iowa Department of Transportation knows that interchange is a problem and has been working on a construction project to fix it. It's going to be a few more years before that gets done because they have to line up all the money. The project will cost more than $200 million.

The DOT wants to change the current cloverleaf design, with its sharp curves, to a design more friendly for drivers. They say the interchange no longer fits the needs of the area since there's so much traffic.

"It really is being worked on now," said Cathy Cutler, Transportation Planner for the DOT. "We had to go through an environmental phase, get that all done, then it goes into the funding cycle for the DOT commission to approve. So really it's just a matter of balancing needs statewide."

Construction isn't expected to start until 2018.
