Black Hawk County launches online weapons permits

Posted: Updated:

You'll soon be able to apply for a weapons permit online, according to Black Hawk County Sheriff Tony Thompson.

The system will go into effect Feb. 1. Those looking for permits will be able to apply from their home computers, or use two kiosks available at the Sheriff's Office.

"When the weapons permitting law changed in 2011, we saw a large influx of applicants for the 5 year permit," Thompson said. "This means that in 2016 there will be the same large numbers for renewals. We wanted to get this process out there early, so that applicants can familiarize themselves with the easy, on-line process, and hopefully reduce the amount of driving and time waiting for our citizens in processing those applications in the future. Because of this new system, the Sheriff's Office will no longer accept paper applications after February 1, 2015 and all applications must use the on-line format either by applying on-line, or at the Sheriff's Office lobby kiosk."

Thompson said a similar process is in place in Polk and Scott counties.

“This software has some interesting features as well, in that it can send you a text message, a voice message, or an e-mail notifying you that your permit is ready for pick-up," Thompson said. "It will also save our citizens one trip to the office as well. We are always looking for efficiency in county government and I believe that this is one improvement that will end up being a benefit to our office and our citizens as well.”

The application will be online here, under the 'weapons permit' button.
