Sen. Ernst on KWWL's Today in Iowa after national address

WASHINGTON, D.C. (KWWL) -

Republicans plan to use their new muscle as the majority in both houses of Congress.

Iowa Senator Joni Ernst gave the GOP response to the State of the Union on Tuesday and then was interviewed by KWWL's Teal Jennings and Jerry Gallagher on Wednesday's 'Today in Iowa' newscast.

In her speech, Sen. Ernst talked about GOP priorities like the Keystone XL pipeline and repealing Obamacare.  "Americans have been hurting, but when we demanded solutions, too often Washington responded with the same stale mindset that led to failed policies like Obamacare. It's a mindset that gave us political talking points, not serious solutions," said Sen. Ernst.

Her speech lasted about 10 minutes and didn't mention President Obama by name very much.

Instead, she focused a lot on her Iowa roots and policies, like trade. She called on lawmakers to tear down trade barriers in places like Europe and the Pacific.
